The previous day, Borja's friend had said he sees ghosts. Borja couldn't accept ghosts exist, not until he experiences one himself.
That's the strange thing with humans - even if their best trusted friend says they've seen a ghost, most won't believe in ghosts unless they see one themselves. It was the same with me. I never believed until one appeared on the bonnet of my parked car, and my friend's wide opened eyes and mouth was evidence enough she saw the same ghost as me!
Borja's first experience came today in the empty 10th century Estibaliz church, near Vitoria. A clear organ note played constantly. Expecting to find a music player, we searched for the source. But the organ wasn't plugged in - Borja tried playing it! There was no sign of another source. The music continued...
Suddenly, Borja exclaimed, "Can you feel that?"
"No," I replied.
"Wow, it's really strong. It's stroking me down my back..." He paused. "Oh, it's gone!"
The second he said it had gone, I felt my back stroked, a physical touch, as if someone ran their hand up and down my spine. "I've got it now," I said, and explained the sensations.
"That's exactly the sensations I had... Oh...! It's come back!"
"Yes," I said. "It's left me." And so it continued for a few minutes, stroking first one then the other, until it left.
Borja was excited. He'd experienced something for the first time. "Who's there?" he called out. As his echo died, he called again, and again. There was no response.
Borja changed his question. "If there's someone there, can you play different music on the organ?"
Suddenly, the constant organ sounds stopped. An eerie silence reigned...
"I can see something over there," I said, pointing to a pillar on the right.
"Me too," said Borja. "I can feel it there. And up there." He pointed to a window.
"And by the door," I said. "There're two here..."
I took out the camera. You never know on these occasions if anything comes out, but it's always worth a shot!
Back home, we downloaded the photos to the laptop. After adjusting the sizes to inspect them easier, we discovered potential evidence!
By the pillar on the right was a misty shape. Another misty shape hung in the doorway. Above Borja as he pretended to play the organ, and by the window were unmistakable perfectly round orbs. Orbs are considered by many to be ghosts appearing through the ether in spherical form.

Borja now believes in ghosts - we'd experienced this one with three of our senses - hearing, feeling and seeing. But I have little doubt that when he tells friends why he knows ghosts exist, they won't believe him.
At least, not until they have their own experience...
