I glanced at the table. Strewn across it were various leaflets. Some looked like they'd lain there for years. One took my eye.
'Free prayer - just ask.'
Why not, I thought. Maybe the two ladies aren't asked for prayers much. I'll make them happy - they can say a prayer for me.
"I'll go for one of your prayers," I said.
The two ladies beamed. "What would you like us to pray for?" asked the stoutly, grey-haired lady.
I thought for a moment. Really, there's always so much need for prayer. "For my family," I eventually replied, feeling a bit guilty I'd asked for something so personal. "Some of them do not understand each other. And that creates conflict and partition."
"Certainly," said the two ladies, almost in unison. "What's your first name?"
Standing each side of me smiling, the slimmer lady with pink glasses spoke her words to God.
"Dear God, this is a love letter to you. I do not know if this will be the answer, if this prayer can provide what this family needs.
"God, in this love letter, we ask you to help this family find something else, to find something in their hearts, a space of love where they are contented.
"But you know God, many of your family on Earth seek love, but don't know what they're seeking. In our humanity we have incomplete understanding of what God and love is.
"Your family on Earth sometimes think they've got to do this, got to do that, got to speak, got to work, got to phone that person they don't always like, got to divide or got to make peace in the family.
"This love letter speaks for Allan's family. The more they have GOT to do something, the greater the burden they have. Life becomes a treadmill. It's a burden to handle the pressures of family life, the load of family life. And the greater the burden, pressures and load, the greater it is to understand each other and be contented.
"So there's a restlessness, a seeking for contentment in family life, a need for love letters to each other."
The stoutly lady gently took over. "God, when you reply to this love letter, we know you know best.
"We only ask you God, to send your love letter by return post to this family. Can you send help this family find contentment? God, you knew this family before they were conceived. You know them. You are their father, this family are your children seeking love. And in this family there are fathers and children too, all seeking everlasting love.
"Please help this family be blessed and not carry their burdens any more, so they can find contentment. This prayer is sent to the very heart of God. A love letter, seeking love."
It felt powerfully good. There's conflicting evidence whether prayer can help. But certainly some scientific research shows it can.
I looked for a collection box. There wasn't one. I looked for the church they worked for, and after some time found it. "It's not about our church," smiled the lady with pink glasses. "It's about love."
As I walked away, peacefully, I glanced behind. The two elderly ladies already had their next love letter 'customer'.
